Lot 586 1866 (March 2), “Public Works / Canada / Free” on 17c blue Cartier cover, to Hereford, England, adhesive tied by Ottawa duplex, carried via New York by the steamer “Cuba” of the Cunard Line, arriving on March 18, with next-day Hereford c.d.s. arrival backstamp, tear through flap, sender’s notation under flap, some light soiling in places, but a rare cover, this circular Public Works handstamp unrecorded by Davis in “An Overview of the Canadian Government Official Handstruck Postal Markings”, where it is noted that “all known Public Works handstamps are hexagonal shaped,” not the case in this instance, fine-very fine.
