Lot 539, Canada 1932 incoming Eastern Arctic Patrol cover to the Captain of S.S. Ungava, Hamilton Ontario to Greenland, sold for C$409
Lot 539 Canada #163, 191 1932 Incoming Eastern Arctic Patrol Cover to the Captain of the Hudson Bay Company ship SS Ungava. Letter mailed at the 5c rate from Hamilton on AUG.1.1932 to Greenland, via Denmark to meet with the ship when it stopped on a courtesy call to drop off mail to Europe. Has a purple boxed “Eastern Arctic / Mail Service. / Hudson’s Bay Co. / S.S. UNGAVA” Sept. 7, 1932 receiver on the front, which is later than all reported dates in O’Reilly’s Northwest Territories Postal Cancellations 1907-1986, which is still the authority on the area. O’Reilly only reports one bag of mail carried on the 1932 trip, so all mail from the Ungava is quite scarce. Edge wear, else fine-very fine. Estimate $150, sold for C$350.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.
