Lot 16, Canada 1851 ten pence blue Jacques Cartier fantasy sketch in pencil on thick paper, sold for C$1,416Lot 16 Canada #7 1851, 10d blue Jacques Cartier, fantasy sketch in pencil, on thick paper, approximately 130mm x 1170mm, purportedly the work of the original designer, with “Clinton Wright 1854” and “R W H & E New York” written in pencil below design, noted at upper right “Purchased from the collection of Mr. Maurice Burrus, Feb 1959, Shanahan Auctions, Dublin, Ireland” and apparently signed by the infamous Dr. Paul Singer, with “Maurice Burrus” written below, incredibly well-executed, and though a fabrication of uncertain origin, a whimsical addition to a specialized collection. Estimate C$250, sold for C$1,200.00 plus 18% buyer’s premium.

As we have done for several auctions now, we group some of the more distinctive postal history items along with the stamps of their time. The following lovely mourning cover is offered early in the Canada section, which takes place this afternoon.

Lot 43 Canada #7 1855 10d blue Cartier on Mourning Cover, mailed at Québec in May, 1857 and addressed to Dundee, North Britain. Red tombstone Packet Letter receiver dated MAY.17.1857 on front, partially over stamp. Stamp, which has four large margins, is tied to cover by a light 4-ring #37. Light overall wear, and missing its backflap, else a very nice cover. Accompanied by a 2013 Greene Foundation certificate stating “stamp may have been removed and replaced.” Unitrade CV$3,000
