Introduction to Auction #9

Our ninth auction is the most varied and comprehensive to date. The 2167 lots offer something for every collector.

It begins with a strong Canada and BNA section of 589 lots. The Pence issues are well-represented with a good selection of very fine including multiple very fine examples of the scarcer 7-1/2 and 10 penny. The half-penny imperforate features a lovely red postmark, while the perforated half-penny has a foreign postmark. For the budget-minded we have lesser quality, for example a very fine appearing mint example of the rare Scott #10 with Certificate but repaired which we estimate at about 5% of catalogue value. The Cents issues and Large Queens each have a number of uncommonly very fine mint examples. Both the Small Queens and the Jubilees each has a standout large mint multiple — a six cent Ottawa printing block of thirty and a five cent block of twenty respectively. The session continues to delight for 460 more lots.

One of the gems in the British Commonwealth section is a four-margin used block of the 1840 two penny blue. Interesting and scarce lots abound in this session. Mauritius 1847 1d red and 2p blue Queen Victoria Compound Die Proofs on cardSpecial mention of Mauritius number one and two must be made. We offer the compound Die Proof of these fabulously expensive iconic issues. It is a post-contemporary production made from the original Dies which were found in 1912 and is scarce in its own right.

Our worldwide stamps with 324 lots begin with a few modest USA then the unusual and the rare appear frequently among the nice quality collector oriented lots. China includes the rare Formosa railway locals as well as a few modern including a 1980 monkey, France and Germany each have a great variety among more than a hundred lots. French Colonies #35a deserves special mention. Iceland and Italy each have some expensive a highlight being the used pair of Iceland Scott #32b. The offering of Japan has the Mayeda collection (ISJP member #2) in over fifty lots. We continue this session with classics, essays, and locals etc.

Postal history is a field where our consignors are, with each auction, offering increasingly interesting and collectible items and collections. This auction, in addition to many lovely single covers (including Canada pence, British Columbia high values, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia bisects), there are dozens of lots which might easily form the basis for a whole new field of collecting enjoyment. These lots were usually assembled over years and decades as the owner sought out the rare and elusive. The successful bidder can continue and expand the collection. Another option is to seriously consider developing an award-winning Exhibit. The extensive postmark collections in this session can lead to similar fun and achievement.

One group of twelve lots, the Viner military memorabilia collection, can be found in the catalogue with two-and-a-half pages of text and scans. However the complete write-up of this collection is more than ten times as lengthy. It can all be found on our website along with extra scans.

In our last auction we offered an extensive number of cartons, albums, and stockbooks in our large lots session. This time the emphasis is more on collector-built specialized offerings as well as generally more valuable and more diverse lots than in the past. And, this auction has even more bulk and with 728 lots has considerably more than last auction.

The auction has been posted to stampauctionnetwork.com. The printed catalogue is presently being mailed to subscribers. Watch www.sparks-auctions.com for additional images, corrections, and featured items as the auction dates approach.

Auction #7, November 8-10th, 2010

Sparks Auctions is pleased to announce our Auction #7, to be held at our premises from Monday November 8 to November 10th, 2010.

We begin Auction 7 with The Healy Pass Collection, a one-owner specialized collection of sufficient caliber to merit a separate session. This plated collection of the Canada Three Penny Beavers, named for a hiking area in the Canadian Rockies, was assembled by a collector and student of the issue.

Better items from our Canada section include more than 200 lots of pence issues with some extremely fine examples. Nearly 100 lots of the 1859, 1868, and 1870 issues offer something for many specialized collections. The Jubilees are represented by a set of Die Proofs and considerable choice in the high values. The balance of Canada offers extremely fine stamps, major varieties, rarities such as the 1908 Quebec Die Proof set, and back of the book including semi-officials and locals.

Worldwide stamps include the high values of Victorian Great Britain, key values from Bangkok, Mafeking, Rhodesia, USA, France and Germany.

Postal History offers many attractive single lots and a cornucopia of carton lots, most of these from the estate of the original addressee. Non-BNA postal history is the strongest we have offered.

Finally, there are 611 lots containing collections and cartons of fun, more than doubling the 278 such lots in our last auction. The extra weeks of work to adequately describe these, as well as the hundreds of scans (available in detail in our Image Gallery, linked at right), should help bidders and viewers assess the interest and value. It is an overwhelming scale and assortment of previously owned and cherished collections..

The catalogue will be mailed to all regular bidders and subscribers when it returns from printing, likely the week of October 11th. Next week, we will begin featuring interesting and noteworthy items in more detail each day here on our site. With the image gallery of additional and detailed scans, the opening bids, and links to bidding at Stamp Auction Network, we believe you will have all you need to bid in a comprehensive and interesting sale.

Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian customers, and may our American cousins have a good Columbus Day weekend!

Lots 485-503, Canada Proofs & Essays from Photographer Jean-Pierre Beaudin

Lots 485-503 in the Canadian Elizabethan material are from the estate of Jean-Pierre Beaudin, a photographer who collaborated on the design of 37 stamps between 1973 and 1999 in addition to producing a number of essays in or about 1970. Mr. Beaudin worked on multiple definitive issues – a rare occurrence. Most of these lots exist in very small quantity, with several items being unique in private hands. Collector Leopold Beaudet has written an article on Mr. Beaudin’s philatelic work, published in The Corgi Times, which provides additional insight. We urge every collector of Canada modern issues to review these lots carefully, as they provide a perfect opportunity to acquire rare or unique material that is perfectly suited for exhibits.

Some highlights:

Lot 485 c.1970 1c to 5c Definitive die essays, set of 5 with 1c brown, 2c red, 4c violet, 5c green and 6c blue, all printed on thin card (87x139mm), very fine. Only 2 of each of the 1c, 2c, 5c and 6c values are recorded in private hands. The 4c value is believed to be unique. Estimate: $500

Lot 492 1981 Les Floralies issue, plate block signed by the 3 designers: Jean-Pierre Beaudin, Jean Morin and Tom Yakobina, very fine, never hinged. Plus two negative pictures, one of which was used for the final design and second showing the grounds of the exhibition (both previously unrecorded), plus 2 matched set of plates blocks, a few singles and a First Day cover (these not signed). Estimate: $75

Lot 494 1982-1987 2c Fishing Spear large size black and white photographs, one of the original unaccepted design showing an "open" spear, 160x195mm pasted on larger card, and second photograph of revised design with "closed" spear with glassine overlay showing various notations from the designer ("For retouching as necessary"). Very fine and unique. Estimate: $250

Sparks Auction #6, May 17-19, 2010

Sparks Auctions is pleased to announce our sixth public auction, to be held at our Ottawa premises on May 17th, 18th & 19th, 2010.

This sale has over 1,600 lots with truly something of interest for every stamp collector. We were pleasantly surprised by the coverage of material entrusted to us by over forty consignors. We are quite confident that you will be too.

The Canada and British North America section is highlighted by three world class rarities, the mint or unused 6d Consort on laid paper (Lot 8), a 3¢ Large Queen on laid paper (Lot 85) and a Newfoundland 1sh orange (Lot 753). These stamps very rarely make an appearance on the auction block, being many times scarcer than the 12 penny black, and we are privileged to offer them in this sale. Are you going to be the lucky collector who gets to cross off "Number 2" from your wantlist?

Not to be outdone are the hundreds of more affordable lots including a high number of premium quality singles and blocks. Several attractive lots of proofs and essays are offered in this sale, including the lovely set of Jubilee proof blocks of ten, several die proofs from the 1920s and a fascinating selection of modern proofs and essays from the Estate of Jean-Pierre Beaudin (Lots 485 to 503). The modern errors come from multiple consignments with almost no overlap and include many items which we have never previously offered.

The British Commonwealth section starts with a glorious example of the 1sh green embossed from Great Britain (Lot 900), and continues with nice quality sets and singles. As for rarities, we can point to the Nandgaon 2a rose (Lot 997) – a very rare stamp indeed despite the modest catalogue value, and the Malayan States overprint, which is headlined by the Sungei Ujong 2 brown with inverted "S" (Lot 1014). This last stamp, along with several others in the sale were found by our staff unidentified within the material consigned to us – it certainly pays to consign early! The foreign section has a nice group of United States, lovely mint Germany in high quality, almost all never hinged, but the highlight remains the trio of rarities from Iceland in premium quality. Postal history is not to be outdone, with a lovely selection of semi-official airmail flight covers, and a rare cover salvaged from the wreck of the St. Olaf (Lot 1315).

The lots and collections once again fill our shelves. Of particular note are the worldwide classic collection with a catalogue value in excess of $100,000 (lot 1727) and other items from the same consignment, such as the classic revenue stamps collection (Lot 1760). We urge viewers to spend some time on the larger lots and collections as some of the last minute consignments will certainly contain nice surprises.

Catalogues are currently at the printers and will be mailed the week of April 26th. The PDF version of the catalogue is now available for viewing or download from the link in the gray box on the right side of this page. You can also find information about bidding, on-site viewing, and a gallery of additional images. Internet bidding is available through stampauctionnetwork.com.

Please let us know if you would like to have a catalogue delivered to you, or if you have any questions about the sale.

Good Luck in the auction!
