Registered Cover to England, mailed from Ottawa on (FEB.10 boxed registration datestamps) to Birmingham (FEB.19 receiver) through Liverpool (FEB.19 transit), franked with a single 10c QV Leaf, neatly tied by an Ottawa roller, paying the 5c U.P.U. letter rate plus 5c registration fee. A scarce in-period single use of this value on a very fine cover. Ex Horace Harrison (2003) and illustrated in Harrison, Arfken and Lussey’s Canada’s Registered Mail 1802-1909 on page 349. Estimate $500, sold for C$600.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.

Lot 1175 Canada #41 1896 Lovely Piano Illustrated Advertising Small Queen Cover, showing a bright red and blue logo for J.L. Orme & Son Ottawa with illustration of a grand piano. The cover was mailed at Ottawa with a 3c Small Queen tied by a perfect strike of an Imperial machine cancel dated MAY.27.1896 to Wisconsin (receiver on back). The back is fully advertised and illustrates an “Orme Lute-Banjo” (“a most charming instrument, especially adapted for ladies use”). A very desirable cover, extremely fine. Ex Ted Kerzner. Lot 759 Canada #35, F1 1888 Registered 1c + 2c Drop Letter to Dead Letter Office, mailed to and from Ottawa on JUL.9.1888 (boxed registration datestamp), the recipient could not be found, as evidenced by “could not be found on…” manuscript note, with octagonal “NOT CALLED FOR / OTTAWA / JUL.31.1888” datestamp. Then sent to Dead Letter Office and received there on AUG.6, (large c.d.s. on back) then with AUG.9 large broken circle on back. This very fine cover is franked with a 1c SQ and 2c RLS (both tied by rosette fancy cancels), paying for the drop letter registered rate. Estimate C$250.
Lot 582, Canada 1897 Jubilee registered cover Ottawa to Owen Sound, sold for C$819
Lot 582 Canada #52, 55 1897 Jubilee Registered Cover, mailed Ottawa on JUL.20.1897 to Owen Sound and received there on the next day. The cover is franked with a fairly scarce combination of the 2c and 6c Jubilee issues, both tied or cancelled by four “C” in circle (House of Commons?) cancels. Very fine and ex Steinhart and priced by him at $500. Estimate $200, sold for C$700.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.
