Lot 241 Canada #158 1929 50c Dark Blue Bluenose, a mint never hinged upper margin block of four, showing part of the plate imprint in margin. A lovely block which is quite fresh, all four stamps are wonderfully centered, extremely fine in all respects. Unitrade CV$2,800, sold for C$2,808 including 17% buyer’s premium.

Lot 809, Wentworth 1828 stampless folded Money Letter with earliest known Hamilton postmark

Another interesting item from today’s Postal History offerings.

Lot 809, Wentworth 1828 stampless folded Money Letter with earliest known Hamilton postmarkLot 809 Wentworth 1828 Money Letter with the Earliest Known Hamilton Postmark, a stampless folded letter mailed at Hamilton on OCT.31.1828 (manuscript precursor, written by postmaster A.R. Smith), rated 1/6 which is 4 times the 4½ rate for 1oz and distance of 48 miles, with one sheet (cover) and three enclosures (currency bills). The letter is datelined “Burlington Canal”, one of the many surrounding towns of Hamilton at the time. This is not only the earliest of the “postmarks” from this postmaster, but is the earliest of all known Hamilton postmarks. Very fine, ex-Cloutier and still on his exhibit page. Estimate $750.

Lot 554, Canada 1898 two cent Map Stamp on cover from Montréal paying circular rate to Toulouse, FranceLot 554 Canada #85 DEC.20.1898 2c Map Paying Circular Rate to France, a lovely yellow Solicitors of Patents corner card cover mailed from Montréal on DEC.20.1898 (Bickerdike flag cancel is dated well before the official DEC.25 day of issue) to Toulouse, France, franked with a single 2c Map with sheet selvedge at left, leaving a nice white space for the machine dater. The envelope backflap is unsealed and still retains its original gum, a pristine and attractive cover, as well as a scarce use of this stamp to pay the printed matter rate to France. Estimate C$150.
