
Lot 366 1894 (December), 1pi single franking from Shwaifat (Mount Lebanon) via Beirut to New York, commercial cover endorsed in manuscript “from Shwaifate – Mount Lebanon via Beyrouth – Syria – Dec. 1894” addressed to New York City, bearing a 1pi pale blue Arms and Tughra issue of Abdul Hamid II, neatly tied by a full strike of the Arabic-only Beirut circular datestamp (reading Beirût with Rumi date 11/2095), reverse showing New York Paid All (20 Jan 95) receiver, light folds and mild toning typical of local paper yet overall fresh, an an exceptional example of this cancellation. Lot 748 People’s Republic of China 1950 (June 6), Shanghai “Flying Goose” meter cover to New York, franked with “**31.00” red boxed meter with “Flying Goose” and red double-circle Shanghai dater, further cancelled with bilingual Shanghai c.d.s. (17 Jun), to New York, a scarce Revolutionary-period usage when postage stamps were not easily attainable, a fine example of this desirable meter. Lot 903 India #203-206 1948 1½a – 10r Gandhi Set on First Day Cover, postmarked Bombay G.P.O on 15 August 1948, mailed air mail to New York City, with two different receivers on back, alongside a Bombay registration label. This is the better and scarcer black (mourning) cover, with the 10r stamp being sound (white area below it is a white area for affixing the stamp), very fine, rare and highly sought after. Rsv. over, mailed at Quebec on APR.12.1856 to New York City, through Montreal (same day transit on back), with a red PAID handstamp alongside the stamp. Franked with a 10d blue Cartier imperforate, with strong re-entry from position 53, with close to large margins, just touching at bottom left and showing next stamp at top. This is an unusual franking, as the single weight rate would have been 6d. A lovely and rare cover, and accompanied by a 1981 Greene Foundation certificate. Ex. Daniel Cantor collection.
